Abstract: On 9 November 1996 Bulgaria lost one of its most talented scientists: George Gargov died after a long prolonged illness. He was a rare combination of a person with a great variety of interests, yet simultaneously purposeful and concentrated. His knowledge extended among the exact sciences (logics, mathematics, physics), humanities (biology, medicine, psychology) and the social sciences (linguistics, sociology, political science), as well as among literature, music and the arts. In many of these areas he left his mark. For this reason it is very difficult for one to paint an overall portrait of him.

To me he was a teacher (he examined me on set theory), a colleague, a co-author (up to now we have 16 published joint papers and 3 accepted ones) and a friend. To me he was also an example to be followed and the man I could discuss every new idea with.

As fas as Intuitionistic Fuzzy Sets (IFSs) go, this was the main theme of our mathematical discussions, especially in the last years, and so I will emphasize them in some detail.

When at the beginning of 1983 I generated the idea of the IFSs and obtained the first results, I showed them to George firstly, of course. He became their godfather; he was the first man who believed in them and encouraged me to continue straight ahead. Some years after this, George started working actively in the research on IFSs and on some of their extensions and applications. Thus, after my first short remark on Interval Valued IFSs (IVIFS), we together described the basic properties of these sets and moreover we showed that interval valued fuzzy sets and IFSs are equipollent concepts [1]. In the period 1989-1994 we worked very hard on research е on Intuitionistic Fuzzy Logics (IFLs) [2-8]. In [2] he took the first step to originating intuitionistic fuzzy predicative logic, and in [3] the first possibility of an intuitionistic fuzzy reason was discussed. In the present issue I include the last text [8] in this direction, which we could not finish. Our main results were collected in two papers accepted in the journal "Fuzzy Sets and Systems".

Our plans contained a book on IFLs, as well as some research in principally a new direction for the IFLs [6].

George Gargov took an interest in historical and bibliographical research too. We wrote together a review of the concept "function" and commented on the publications on IFSs and IFLs in Bulgaria [9]. He was one of the most energetic participants of the group, which in the last years of the 80s started to describe the functioning and the results of the work on expert systems in terms of generalized nets (extensions of Petri nets) [10-13].

I hope that in the coming years ideas for the future of the IFSs and IFLs, which George and I discussed, will be realized and this will be a humble memorial of his unforgettable personality and achievement.
