The userpages, i.e. pages from User: namespace (id 2) are provided for registered users to make a short presentation of themselves, or to use for other purposes like leaving important memos, listing their wiki contributions, linking to useful or favourite pages etc. These userpages are automatically allocated in the database for the registered users on the very instance of registration.
Anonymous users also have user pages, corresponding to the IP-address through which they edit, but they will share these userpages with other users of the same IP (if any).
The respective talk pages, forming namespace User talk: are provided for users to personally interact among each other. These personal discussion pages are remarkable with one feature: whenever the talk page has been edited, a notification pops up on any newly visited page, until opening the talk page.
Since the user page is only one, subpages can be used to enlarge the personal userspace and organize the information in a neat and practical way.
